acupunctureIs Acupuncture painful?

Hair-thin needles are used in Acupuncture. Patients usually experience some pressure or a warm sensation which means that endorphins are beginning to release. Depending upon the area of the body, there is the possibility of a slight, momentary "pinch" when the needle is inserted. Normally, the patient feels nothing uncomfortable.

Is there any chance of infection from the needles?
No, only disposable needles are used on the patients and all clean needle technique protocols are followed at Oriental Family Medicine.

Is Acupuncture covered by insurance?
Yes. Many insurance policies are now reimbursing for acupuncture services; be sure to check your individual policy for specifics. According to Florida law, any insurance policy that covers acupuncture performed by a licensed Medical Doctor must provide the same coverage to a Florida licensed Acupuncturist. They cannot discriminate. This is written in Florida House Bill No. 461, 1987.

How many Acupuncture treatments does a person need?
Depending upon the complexity and severity of the condition, a course of treatment can be anywhere from one or two visits to 15 or more.

Do you use therapies other than Acupuncture?
Yes. Acupuncture is just one therapy used by Traditional Chinese medicine. Some of the other modalities used include:

Chinese Massage, which is called Tui. This is a type of massage that is specific to a structural problem and is very effective for many neck and back conditions.

Electro-Acupuncture. This adds electrical stimulation to the needles. It feels like hundreds of tiny fingers massaging the body.

Moxabustion is an ancient warming therapy that gives relief to a painful area by the use of heat-producing herbs.

Chinese Herbal Medicine encompasses a large part of Traditional Chinese medicine, especially internal conditions. Many times, for treatment to be effective, one or more herbal formulas are prescribed. These special formulas are based on 2,500-year-old medical texts. The patient must be diagnosed by TCM diagnostic techniques to get the most effective results without side effects. When properly used, they help balance the body's systems. The remedies are non-toxic and are prepared in easy-to-take pill form.

Do you feel Western medicine is necessary?
Absolutely. There are certain situations that must be treated with Western modalities. In China, Western medical practitioners and acupuncture physicians work together in hospitals to bring patients the best health care possible. With positive endorsement by the national Institutes of Health in 1997, this may soon be a reality in the U.S.
